Biosphere Consulting, Inc. was first incorporated in 1975 as an environmental consulting firm. After years of working toward reducing environmental impacts of proposed development and design of mitigation projects, the company began to focus efforts toward restoration and creation of natural systems. Our nursery was started in 1991 to support these projects and has continued to expand to include landscape projects designed to increase habitat value in developed, even urban, areas. This “bioscaping” has become an interesting and popular concept in landscaping.

The principal of this firm, Jim Thomas is a fourth generation Florida native with degrees in biology and a great appreciation for natural Florida. Years of watching the systematic destruction of these native habitats have stimulated him to become an environmental activist and he has participated in many environmental projects which have successfully brought about the preservation and restoration of valuable natural areas. Combining the application of sound scientific principles with political reality and the organization of educated citizen advocates has proven to be a successful formula. The firm still contributes a considerable amount of time and resources to environmental causes and is particularly active with the Friends of Lake Apopka, the Oakland Nature Preserve and the Audubon Society. In addition to these projects, the group has active membership in other groups such as the Friends of the Wekiva River, Florida Wildlife Federation, National Wildlife Federation, the Florida Nursery Growers Association, the Association of Florida Native Nurseries, the Central Florida and National Association of Environmental Professionals, the Florida Native Plant Society and the local and state chapter of the Florida Lake Management Society and well as many others.
